Back in the late ’90s through to around 2013, Lloyd Brown was a regular on our review desk. At the time we took a closer look at albums such as Deep, Against The Grain, Dreams To Remember, and the superb doubler Rhyme & Reason. One of the last albums we covered was Rootical, a strong set out of Zion High Productions.

After that, things went quiet on our end. Not because, Mr. Melody as we called him, stopped working—far from it. He actually dropped around 15 albums over the next decade, but somehow they just didn’t reach us and over time we kind of lost track of him.

Then, by pure chance, we stumbled onto his latest release, This, That And The Third. And honestly, it feels like reconnecting with an old friend you didn’t realize you missed this much.

Run through the 12 tracks and it hits you straight away: Lloyd Brown hasn’t lost a thing. That voice is still smooth, still warm, still full of soul. He glides over riddims with ease, delivering lyrics that feel honest and grounded. There’s a calm confidence in how he handles each tune. You can tell he knows exactly what he’s doing.

Alongside fresh material, he revisits Mo Bay Blue from his 1995 album Straight No Chaser, and brings in some well-chosen covers. Tunes like Don Ricardo’s Don’t Call My Name, Sting’s It’s Probably Me, The Blues Busters’ Thinking Of You, and True To Myself by Ziggy Marley all get the Lloyd Brown treatment—respectful, but with his own flavor.

Every track is well put together, no doubt. But then you reach Status Quo [LB’s Disco 45 Dub Mix] and that’s a a serious highlight. Nearly 10 minutes long, driven by a beautiful trumpet sound from Patrick Tenyue, it’s the kind of tune you can just get lost in. That track alone is worth the price of admission.

Patrick Tenyue also co-produces cuts like Neither The Time Or The Place and Too Old For This Sh*t, both adding extra weight to the project.

No long talk—this one’s special. This, That And The Third is one of those albums that grows on you quickly and stays with you. Put it on, let it play, and you’ll feel the magic of Lloyd Brown and his music.
