Kēvens Influenced by The Great Bob Marley

Everyone who can testify that Bob Marley, the greatest reggae artiste, has impacted their lives, is worthy of recognition.

According to Kēvens, whose music has transcended beyond the imagination of even scholars, “I recognized the greatness of Bob Marley when he released ‘Rastaman Vibration’. This was in April 1976.

“It was like something ran through my entire body, unexplainable. I was at first a bit confused because it came without warning. I found myself replaying this music over and over because it was a sudden injection, but this was medicine to make me a better person.”

“Bob’s music was not just music to entertain. It allowed me to think deeper about my existence and purpose in life.”

“Before, I thought I knew about life, which includes my identity and how I should share my music with the world. But, with Bob’s music, I was now aware of who I am and how I could contribute to the world.”

Kēvens had the opportunity to meet Bob Marley’s mother Cedella Booker and posed the question, “How should I write music? The Mother of Wisdom looked me straight in my eyes, confidently saying ‘Write a song like you would be writing a letter, with melody and message’.”

“Bob’s mother was like a teacher. She knew how to direct one through their musical path and I am honoured to have crossed her path.”

Mention the name Zimbabwe and there is a sudden spark in Kēvens’ voice.

“Zimbabwe’s independence, which had Bob Marley performing to thousands, was a testament of his love for his own brothers and sisters, and more so the opportunity to share his message to the world.”

“I knew that I was listening to the right teacher because Bob is a teacher of many subjects and he does so with that energy which will make you pass the test of times.”

“I could tell I had a teacher to get me ahead of the class. And it manifested as my voice became unforgettable.”

“And for all this to happen, one has to eat well. And Bob was helping to shape not only my mental awareness. He began to influence the very foods I began to eat, referred to as ‘Ital’ which is natural plant-based foods.”

Turning to the One Love Concert at the National Stadium, April 22, 1978. This was a historical scene in which Bob brought Michael Manley and Edward Seaga, heads of the two rival political parties PNP and JLP, holding hands.

“It was brave and heroic with Bob’s intention to help bring stability and peace to a divided violent prone country.”

And as Kevens approaches his first stop, he reminds us that Bob Marley’s legacy lives on.

“It’s not only through his children, his music, or accolades, but people like you and I who see him as a blessing to the world.”
