What’s It Like Being Married to a Jamaican? Niqui & Larry’s Story

Love knows no boundaries, and for Niqui and Larry, their journey as an intercultural couple is filled with laughter, learning, and a deep appreciation for each other’s backgrounds. In a recent interview with Xavier Murphy, founder of Jamaicans.com, the couple shared their unique love story, cultural differences, and hilarious misunderstandings that have shaped their relationship.

How It All Began

Larry, an American, and Niqui, a proud Jamaican, met while working at the same college. Their initial encounter was a playful misunderstanding—Larry needed directions, and Niqui insists she wasn’t flirting, though Larry saw it differently! As fate would have it, their paths kept crossing, leading to a friendship that blossomed into something more.

Their first official date? That’s still up for debate! Larry forgot to show up to a Stranger Things-themed event Niqui invited him to, so he made up for it by offering dinner. Thinking it would be a casual meal, Larry was surprised when Niqui made formal reservations at Disney Springs. Though she insisted it wasn’t a date—just a “pay-up party” for standing her up—the connection was undeniable.

Embracing Cultural Differences

Marrying into a different culture comes with its challenges, and for Niqui and Larry, this is an everyday adventure. From differences in cleaning habits to debates on politics and religion, they’ve had to navigate their unique backgrounds. One of the biggest lessons for Larry was understanding not only Black culture but also the immigrant experience. He credits Niqui for being patient and willing to teach, while she appreciates his openness and commitment to learning.

Then there’s the language barrier—because, yes, even English can have its challenges! Larry was confused by phrases like “stay by my mum” instead of “stay at my mum’s,” and it took him six months to realise a petrol station is simply a gas station. Patois? That was a whole new level, especially when he spent an entire Thanksgiving nodding along to a conversation he didn’t understand!

A Love for Jamaican Food

If there’s one thing that cemented Larry’s love for Jamaica, it’s the food! While he was hesitant at first, he’s now a full-fledged fan of ackee and saltfish, oxtail, and—surprisingly—bully beef (corned beef). His obsession with Jamaican cuisine even led him to master jerk chicken, though originally Niqui’s recipe he has well and truly owned the jerk grill.

Family & Jamaican Identity

One of the most touching aspects of their journey is how deeply Larry has been embraced by Niqui’s family. He sometimes forgets he’s not Jamaican, especially during celebrations like Emancipation Day when he’s jumping up and down with the rest of the family. His dream? A true Jamaican countryside experience—rafting on the Martha Brae River, visiting the rural parts of Jamaica, and fully immersing himself in the culture.

Lessons for Intercultural Couples

Niqui and Larry’s story is a testament to the beauty of embracing cultural differences. Their advice for couples navigating a multicultural relationship? Be open, willing to learn, and authentic. Understanding your partner’s background helps deepen the relationship and shows love in its truest form.

Final Laughs

Perhaps one of the funniest moments in their journey was when Larry, feeling disappointed he hadn’t met a Jamaican on his travels, accidentally blurted out “Jeez an’ peas” in a restaurant—only for a Jamaican bartender to whip around in surprise!

Their love story is a heartwarming reminder that relationships thrive when built on mutual respect, patience, and a willingness to embrace new experiences. Watch their full interview below and share your own intercultural love stories in the comments!
