WEEKLY DEVOTIONAL: Looking Back, Pressing Forward

As the year draws to a close, it is a natural time to reflect on the past months—the triumphs, the challenges, and everything in between. The Bible encourages us to look back with gratitude, recognizing God’s faithfulness in every season. In Psalm 107:1, we read, “Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His steadfast love endures forever!” (ESV). This verse reminds us to give thanks because God’s love is constant and enduring, even when life feels uncertain. Take a moment to recall the ways God has worked in your life this year. How has He provided, guided, or comforted you?

The end of the year is also an opportunity to let go of the burdens we have carried. Jesus invites us in Matthew 11:28–31, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Whatever disappointments, regrets, or pain this year has brought, lay them at the feet of Jesus. He offers rest and renewal as you prepare to move forward.

While looking back is important, Scripture also encourages us to press on with hope. In Philippians 3:13-14, Paul writes, “Forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the [heavenly] prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (AMP). While we learn from the past, we are not defined by it. Read that sentence again, slowly. In other words, no particular characteristic, experience, belief, or role has to significantly shape how you and I are understood or perceived, either by ourselves or others. God’s mercies are new every morning (Lam. 3:22–23), and He is always at work, shaping us into the image of Christ (Romans 8:28–29).

As you reflect, consider setting spiritual intentions for the coming year. Proverbs 16:3 encourages us, “Commit your works to the Lord [submit and trust them to Him], and your plans will succeed [if you respond to His will and guidance].” Here we are reminded to align our goals with God’s will, trusting Him to guide our steps. As the year closes, let us end with a heart of gratitude and anticipation. Thank God for His faithfulness, release the burdens of the past, and look ahead to the future with trust in His promises.
