WEEKLY DEVOTIONAL: God is Faithful!

I love hymns, and one of my favorites is Great is Thy Faithfulness. God’s faithfulness is a cornerstone of biblical truth, reflecting His unwavering reliability, unchanging nature, and steadfast love. From Genesis to Revelation, Scripture reveals a God who not only keeps His promises but remains constant through all circumstances. His faithfulness provides assurance and hope for believers in every season of life. It is the one thing that I can unwaveringly trust.

The Bible reveals that God is faithful in fulfilling His promises. Numbers 23:19 declares, “God is not man, that He should lie, or a son of man, that He should change His mind. Has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not fulfill it?” (ESV). In this verse, we see the certainty of God’s words, assuring believers that His promises are reliable. Bible scholar John Gill writes, “He is God that cannot lie; His counsels of old are faithfulness and truth; His promises yea and amen in Christ; the Scriptures inspired by Him are true, and the prophecies of them are punctually accomplished.” A profound example of God’s faithfulness is His covenant with Abraham. In Genesis 17:7, He promises, “I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you.” Despite human shortcomings and the passage of time, God remained true to His word, fulfilling His promise through the nation of Israel and ultimately through Jesus Christ.

God’s faithfulness is most evident during times of hardship, serving as a source of comfort and strength. In Lamentations 3:22–23, we read, “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness” (NIV). This passage reminds us that God’s faithfulness is renewed daily, providing hope even in the darkest moments. Bible scholar Matthew Henry observes, “Had we been dealt with according to our sins, we should have been consumed long ago; but we have been dealt with according to God’s mercies, and we are bound to acknowledge it to his praise.” The psalms also celebrate God’s unwavering faithfulness. Psalm 91:4 states, “He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings, you will find refuge; His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.” In this imagery, we see God as a protector, always dependable and present.

The ultimate demonstration of God’s faithfulness is found in Jesus Christ. Through Him, God fulfilled the promise of salvation for all of humanity (John 3:16; 2 Cor. 5:21). Paul also reminds us, “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are ‘Yes’ in Christ” (2 Cor. 1:20), affirming Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection stand as eternal proof of God’s reliability and love. Hebrews 10:23 encourages us, “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful.” Trusting in God’s faithfulness allows you and me to live confidently, knowing He will never fail to keep His word. That has been and continues to be enough for me. How about you?
