Supergroup The Kingston Lions reinterprets classics
NEW RELEASE
Ahead of their self-titled debut album, set for release on August 15, reggae supergroup The Kingston Lions have unveiled a vibrant rendition of Dandy Livingstone’s timeless reggae classic, Rudy, A Message To You.
With Karell Wisdom on lead vocals, the track features contributions from Calvin Cameron (Light of Saba) on trombone and David Madden (Zap Pow) on trumpet, offering fans a tantalizing preview of what’s to come. Rudy, A Message To You is just one of many revered classics Kingston Lions have reimagined for their album. Alongside Bob Andy and Marcia Griffiths’ Young, Gifted And Black, Willie Williams’ Armagideon Time, Desmond Dekker’s global hit Israelites, the album includes anthems such as Rivers Of Babylon, Pressure Drop, and Dreamland.
The group was formed by guitarist and musical arranger Mikey Chung, who sought to honor Jamaica’s musical heritage by assembling a supergroup of legendary session players to breathe new life into iconic songs from the ’60s and ’70s. The group boasts an extraordinary lineup, including Boris Gardiner, whose basslines anchor countless Studio One classics; Robbie Lyn, a pioneer of innovative keyboard work; and Mikey ‘Boo’ Richards, whose powerful riddims defined an era. They are joined by other luminaries such as Patrick McDonald, Franklyn ‘Bubbler’ Waul, and Uzziah ‘Sticky’ Thompson, all of whom played pivotal roles in shaping reggae’s global legacy.
Tragically, several members of this historic lineup, including Sticky Thompson, Mikey Chung, and Karell Wisdom, have passed away since the recordings were completed, making this release also a heartfelt tribute to their remarkable artistry.
