Studio 16 reissues Upsetter 7″ singles
Blue Bells – Come Along
The 1976 roots track Come Along was the biggest hit for the Blue Bells, a duo formed by lead singer Hector Wright and harmony vocalist Raphael Martin. Created at Lee “Scratch” Perry’s Black Ark Studio, the song was both penned and produced by Hector Wright. In 2014, it saw a reissue from Switzerland’s Reggae Fever on the Premier label, followed by another release from Winston Edwards’ Studio 16 Records on the Upsetter label. The dub version appears on the reverse side.
Junior Delgado – Sons Of Slaves
First released in 1977, Sons Of Slaves is a stunning blend of Lee Perry’s signature Black Ark production style and Junior Delgado’s powerful, keening vocals. Since then, it has been reissued multiple times, and now it makes its way back into circulation through Winston Edwards’ Studio 16 Records in London. Recorded for Lee “Scratch” Perry at his renowned Black Ark studio, Sons Of Slaves stands out as one of the Upsetter’s greatest works from the roots era. Featuring background music from the Heptones and Dennis Brown, this 7″ single offers a different mix compared to the 12″ version.
Junior Mervin – Cross Over
Junior Mervin, also known as Junior Murvin, gained fame for his iconic track Police & Thieves, produced by Lee “Scratch” Perry in 1976. This single, co-written with Perry, showcased Murvin’s soaring vocal and catapulted him to international recognition. Alongside his breakthrough hit, the 1978 release Cross Over stands out as one of Murvin’s finest works with Perry. Re-released on a 7″ vinyl single with a dub version on the B-side, this mix is considerably darker and heavier compared to the 12″ version from 1981. In this song, Murvin passionately implores listeners to discard their weapons and join the ranks of the Rastafarian faithful.
