Singer Dee finally links with Richie Spice

“He heard my voice, and suggested that Richie Spice and I should record a song together. Unfortunately, that collaboration never materialized at the time,” Singer Dee recalled.

The two vocalists finally linked last year through a mutual friend. They co-wrote a song titled ‘Treat Mama Good’, which was released in May.

Produced by Singer Dee, it has done well in his adopted hometown of Edmonton, Canada as well as Jamaica. ‘Treat Mama Good’ has entered the Jamaica Music Countdown chart, a weekly table compiled by respected broadcaster Richard “Richie B” Burgess.

According to Singer Dee, “It is a song that celebrates and honours mothers for their love, sacrifices, and guidance.”

Singer Dee (given name David Bryan) has been in the music business since the 1990s. Born in Portland parish in eastern Jamaica, he spent his formative years in Kingston where much of his time was spent around sound systems.

Some of his previous songs include ‘Never Give Up’, ‘Reggae Avenue’ and ‘Ten Toes’. The latter is also the name of Singer Dee’s production company which released ‘Treat Mama Good’.

His latest recording has turned out to be the most successful to date. It pairs him with Richie Spice, one of the biggest names in contemporary roots-reggae.

Years after Bobby Digital prompted him to seek Richie Spice, Singer Dee discovered that everything the producer said was accurate.

“From the moment we started collaborating, the chemistry was natural. Richie is like a brother, a genuinely good person with a great sense of humour,” said Singer Dee. “Working with such an experienced artiste was an incredible experience, and I learned a lot from him both musically and professionally.”

For the past eight years, he has lived in Edmonton, the capital of Alberta, where the most popular pastime and team are ice hockey and the Edmonton Oilers. There is a vibrant country and rock music scene that has produced acts like k.d. lang and Tupelo Honey.

While Edmonton has a solid reggae base, Singer Dee still gets his vibe from ‘yaad’.

“Although I am based in Edmonton, much of my recording and production work is still connected to Jamaica, which remains the birthplace and spiritual home of reggae music,” he said.
