Shellstreet recalls sharing stage with Vybz Kartel
Many artistes are hoping to even hitch a ride on the Freedom Street train to the stadium, while others are shaping up to blow their whistle to the sold-out audience. But, after the dust has settled, who will make the cut?
One young and promising artiste, who has already shared the stage with the self-proclaimed ‘World Boss’, is no other than Shellstreet who’s young, vibrant, artistic, and lyrical.
He has combined these attributes in one amazing package which is turning heads at the moment.
His producer Marlon Graham, principal of Marlon Graham Promotion LLC, feels “He has the grit to impress any large audience.
“Shellstreet not only dreams but turns dreams into reality,” Marlon mused. And before he could make an addition, his student was quick to do the maths. “Shellstreet was then in his late teens, loving music like cooking food.”
“Before my glorious opportunity, I had seen Kartel on television. As for radio, one couldn’t escape his image. I wanted to share his moment, just as other big artistes on stage.”
This stage was in Rema and Shellstreet was not billed for the show. But he kept telling himself he would be sharing the glory that comes that night.
“As the days grew nearer to the event everyone was shaping up, including the females who had plans to dress and impress. I reached the show about 9 o’clock that weekend night. The place was corked with fans of Kartel. The music began hours before.”
“I was about twenty feet from the stage and remember saying ‘Jah mi affi perform tonite’, as I approached on stage.”
“At about 10 o’clock, a promoter gave me a cigarette to give it to Kartel and that was the moment which made everything possible.”
“Potential Kid took to the stage. He was my brethen and he handed the mike to me and I knew I had the passport to perform.”
“I performed a dancehall song which was well received by the audience. That night I felt good within myself. The day after I was fully congratulated by my friends.”
Shellstreet keeps counting the days before Kartel’s Freedom Street concert. And, Shellstreet is harbouring yet another dream.
“I only need five minutes on that stage, and I will surely shell down the stadium.”
