Days ahead of his performance at Love In The Gardens in Kingston on February 11, Sanchez spoke about his enduring career and what keeps him in the game after nearly 40 years.

“First, I must give thanks to God for the longevity, staying out of trouble and continuing to make great songs,” he said.

The event, which featured American Rhythm And Blues singer Freddie Jackson and Alaine, took place three days before that special days for lovers. It was right up Sanchez’ street.

“Valentine’s Day is very special ’cause I’m always booked a year in advance and it’s that special time of year true lovers look forward to,” he stated.

Not surprisingly, Sanchez was the star of the show, drawing rapturous applause from a sing-along audience decked out in red and white who danced to his stream of lovers rock hits.

Last year marked the 35th anniversary since the release of ‘Loneliness’, Sanchez’ first hit song, produced by Winston Riley. Originally done by Jermaine Jackson as ‘Lonely Won’t Leave me Alone’, it triggered a flurry of big cover songs that made him one of dancehall music’s biggest acts.

Although he has been criticised for his flurry of covers, Sanchez has hit the charts with his own compositions which include the Bobby Digital-produced ‘I Can’t Wait’ and ‘Never dis di Man’, produced by Philip “Fatis” Burrell.

His latest song, ‘The Best In Me’, is written by Hopeton Lindo, the prolific singer-songwriter whose credits include massive hits like ‘Telephone Love’ by JC Lodge, ‘Can You’ by Brian and Tony Gold and Gregory Isaacs’ ‘Red Rose For Gregory’.

When he began compiling songs for his Favorite ‘riddim’ EP, released on February 8, Lindo sought Sanchez for ‘The Best In Me’.

“I write for many top artistes but I have my favourites like everyone else and Sanchez is one of my all-time favourite singers. So, it’s definitely very easy writing for him as I know his amazing vocal range and style so I consider it an honour to be a part of his musical journey,” he explained.

Sanchez was born Kevin Jackson in Kingston. He was part of a talented batch of artistes from the Whitehall Avenue community of the Jamaican capital who emerged during the late 1980s. Others included brothers Flourgon and Red Dragon, and Daddy Lizard.

Recently, Sanchez has reintroduced himself to a new generation of Jamaican fans, thanks to performances on high-profile shows such as Reggae Sumfest and Rebel Salute. In 2022, he received a special award from the Jamaican government for his contribution to his country’s music industry.
