Conscious reggae singer Rasta Blacspade is imploring Jamaicans to work within their communities to improve the standard of living, especially for the less fortunate.

“I believe we have forgotten that our communities are an integral part of our lives. It is an extension of our homes, as such we must ensure our communities are safe and healthy, especially for our children and the elderly.”

Labour Day is a holiday born out of public service. In May, individuals, schools, clubs, and other organizations are encouraged to volunteer on Labour Day to improve the environment.

Labour Day in Jamaica will be observed on Thursday, May 23, 2024, under the theme, “Ramp Up The Access… Show That You Care,” with a focus on people with disability, the elderly, and the vulnerable.

According to Rasta Blacspade, “I would love to see improved participation in beautifying our communities, which includes the patching of roadways, planting of trees, removal of zinc fences, and regular maintenance to sustain these improvements.”

“As adults, we should demonstrate the act of cleanliness by keeping our drains free from plastic bottles and other refuse. This will help to prevent flooding during heavy rains.

“Have regular community meetings with your Member of Parliament, councilors, police, teachers, and all other stakeholders, so that decisions are made democratically.”

“Gone are the days when our community helps to raise children, ensuring good attitudes and values and that every citizen knows where to go to find answers.”

“No matter where we go, we must remember the community which helped us to shape our future. We must never forget our past but strive to improve and enrich our community.”
