Rasta Blacspade defends Marcus Garvey
The Jamaican-born singjay in opening the doors of ‘Jah Jah Love’ echoes the words “Diss Marcus Garvey and you make the biggest mistake.”
“Garvey has done a lot for Jamaicans. Do you hear the calls, heralding voices that Garvey’s teachings must be taught in schools? Such a call is being made even before he was crowned National Hero of Jamaica.”
“Marcus Garvey has given many the power, let me reframe and say tools, to see themselves as progressive, and to work towards their successes in life.”
“I know for a fact, that too often blacks see themselves as inferior to other races due to the history which they have been taught over time. So, they misjudged their capabilities believing they were followers and not inventors.”
“Blacks are responsible for over 1000 inventions. Garrett Morgan, for example, invented the three-light traffic signal in 1923. We can also think of Thomas Jennings getting things right in dry cleaning clothes.”
“Garvey allows us to realise that our potential is limitless and that we can achieve through unity.”
The ‘Love Over All Things’ artiste reminds us that, “Three important works of Garvey include his books which have taught blacks how they can uplift their race through unity, self-discipline, and hard work.
The ‘Be Like The Sea’ artiste concludes by repeating his stance that, “Disrespecting our elders like Marcus Garvey is one of the biggest mistakes anyone could make.”
