Peckings releases Alton Ellis – Showcase

The showcase format points toward the 1970s reworks by Sonia Pottinger, created during the period when she gained access to the original Duke Reid master tapes. Duke Reid, the former sound-system champion turned powerhouse producer, shaped the rocksteady era with his Treasure Isle label. His studio was home to Tommy McCook & The Supersonics, whose tight horn arrangements and smooth riddims gave Ellis the perfect backdrop for his soulful, emotionally charged delivery. As one of Jamaica’s most influential singers, Alton Ellis helped define the transition from ska to rocksteady, laying the foundation for lovers rock and early roots.

The release also nods to another giant of Jamaican music: U-Roy. Widely regarded as the pioneer of toasting, U-Roy transformed the role of the deejay with his rhythmic, melodic mic style. Of the six tracks on this LP, only I Can’t Stand It features him, but it’s a standout cut — a raw, early example of his groundbreaking approach, riding the riddim with effortless cool and helping set the stage for what would later become dancehall.

A crisp, roots-rich release that reconnects listeners with the golden era of Jamaican music, blending Ellis’ timeless vocals with the historic Treasure Isle lineage.
