Married to a Jamaican : How Ana and Albert Found Each Other at a Soca Party in Kingston

Ana never imagined that her love story would take her from Kingston to Catalonia. But a single moment at a soca party changed everything, leading to a beautiful cross-cultural romance between a Jamaican wife and her Spanish husband.

A Chance Encounter That Changed Everything

As soon as Ana stepped into the party she noticed four Spanish friends in the crowd, including Albert, who was working in Jamaica at the time. When one of his friends, who was a bit more enthusiastic than he should have been, began making uncomfortable overtures to Ana on the dance floor. Albert stepped in, apologised on his friend’s behalf and started a conversation.

What followed surprised them both. Their chat flowed effortlessly, full of humour and curiosity. Although Ana initially refused to give him her number, she eventually agreed. Two days later they went on their first date, and three years later, on that same day, they were married. Ana and Albert now live in Catalonia with their son.

Worlds Colliding

Ana Strachan who is a classical singer, was born and raised in Kingston, and has lived in the United States for several years before returning home. Albert Porcar Guri who is a project manager grew up in a small town near Barcelona and worked across Europe before Jamaica became part of his journey. Despite their different backgrounds, they connected instantly.

Their early dates were full of lighthearted moments, including Ana preparing to jump out of Albert’s car because she didn’t recognise the late-night spot he was driving to near Devon House. Thankfully, the “secret place” turned out to be a cosy Kingston pub, and the night ended with laughter rather than alarm.

Their approach to marriage was equally unique. Albert believed they were already committed long before any legalities were involved, expressing that, in his mind, they were married. For Ana who comes from a culture where weddings, church counselling and formal engagement matter, this difference led to amusing but meaningful conversations. Ultimately, they decided together that they were ready to make it official.

What They Love Most About Each Other

Ana treasures Albert’s humour, discipline and unwavering respect, even in difficult moments. She admires his ability to maintain relationships, communicate openly and avoid “burning bridges,” a trait she finds refreshing.

Albert, on the other hand, praises Ana’s exceptional intuition. He says she can read people instantly, spotting intentions he completely misses. He also loves how supportive, calm and understanding she is, especially when life gets challenging. And in true romantic fashion, he adds, “Who doesn’t want an opera singer in their home?”

Love and Culture Intertwined

Now living in Catalonia, Ana and Albert quickly discovered that Jamaica and Catalonia move to very different cultural rhythms. During his years in Jamaica, Albert experienced the island’s warm, laid-back openness, while recognising that Catalonians can seem more reserved and slow to warm to newcomers something Ana has learned to navigate and has come to accept.

As a couple, they’ve embraced their cultural and individual differences with understanding, intention and love. Ana encourages partners to do the same, she advises that they learn each other’s language to truly appreciate the other’s world. Albert believes in offering grace, remembering that cultural misunderstandings are natural and that both people are learning as they go.
