Leba Hibbert carries on Toots’ legacy
When Toots Hibbert died in September, 2020 at age 77, there was the usual anxiety that swirls whenever a legendary artiste passes away. Would someone carry on his legacy? What were the plans for his extensive catalogue?
Leba Hibbert, one of the singer/songwriter’s daughters, answered one of those questions by fronting Toots And The Maytals Featuring Leba Hibbert, which recently completed a 10-show tour of the United Kingdom.
The band, which includes veteran bassist Danny “Axeman” Thompson and guitarist Leebert “Gibby” Morrison, performed in major cities including Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cambridge and London.
It was not Leba’s first outing as lead singer of one of reggae’s revered acts. She debuted in the United States in late 2023; she returned to that country last year for gigs in South Carolina, Virginia, New York, New Jersey and New Hampshire.
Europe, a happy stomping ground for her father since the late 1960s, was a different kettle of fish.
“It was a great and wonderful tour, I ‘fulljoyed’ every moment of it. I would say I took up the mantle and wore it proudly,” she said.
Leba, who toured for many years with Toots as a member of 54-46, admits that being a harmony singer is nothing compared to the spotlight.
“These nerves won’t let me be! I always get them before I go on stage,” she said. “Daddy was a great performer and now the spotlight is on me, people pay to see me, so I have to represent.”
Most of the shows ‘Featuring Leba Hibbert’ played were at venues like Koko in London and O2 Ritz in Manchester, which have 1,500 capacities. They attracted fans who sang along to Toots And The Maytals staples like 54-46, ‘Take me Home Country Roads’, ‘Funky Kingston’ and ‘Pressure Drop’.
To stamp her identity, Leba said it is important she performs some of her songs.
“I perform 90 percent of Toots And The Maytals songs, and 10 percent of mine. I have to take my time and introduce myself to Daddy’s audience,” she explained.
Leba Hibbert recently released her EP, ‘Into The Light’. Her sole album, ‘Intoxicated’, was released in 2011.
