REISSUE

King Kong, the Jamaican deejay/singer, gained prominence in the 1980s with hits like the Jammy-produced tracks Trouble Again and Legal We Legal. While many of his songs reflected the typical themes of the time, a number addressed cultural and political issues. The latter is particularly evident in Song Of Love (Tribute To Mandela), a track released in the US in 1989 under Pisces Productions. French label Jamwax has licensed this rare track from Dennis Anthony Thomas aka King Kong, and reissued it along with its version on 12″ vinyl.

Underpinned by a digi riddim, Song Of Love (Tribute To Mandela) serves as an anti-apartheid anthem that conveys the collective desire for peace and liberty, reflecting the global resonance of the South African fight—particularly in Jamaica, where reggae musicians like King Kong bolstered these messages through their music. The lyrics express the intensity and emotional weight of the battle against apartheid in South Africa. It mentions the then-President P.W. Botha, making a poignant plea for human rights and unity among the South African populace. By emphasizing themes of togetherness and love, King Kong highlights the strength of the people and the richness of cultural solidarity.
