Wesley Frater, a proud Jamaican and influential figure in South Florida sports, was recently honored with a Proclamation from Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. The recognition took place during the 27th Annual South Florida Athletic Awards, held at Warren Henry Auto Dealership, the event’s title sponsor.
This prestigious Proclamation highlighted Frater’s tireless efforts to uplift athletes and young people both in South Florida and Jamaica. As the Founder and Director of the Tournament of Champions, Inc., Frater has spent over three decades creating programs that go beyond sports, focusing on mentorship, leadership, and education for underserved communities.
“Over three decades, I’ve witnessed the incredible rise of elite Jamaican athletes in South Florida’s youth sports. My greatest pride lies in helping their families navigate the complexities of American sports, ensuring their talents shine on and off the field,” Frater told the Jamaicans.com team.
Giving Back to Jamaica
While Frater has made a significant impact in South Florida, his heart has always been connected to his homeland, Jamaica. In 2004, he expanded his outreach efforts by launching programs specifically designed to support underserved children in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean.
One of these initiatives, Sole to Soul, collects and distributes shoes and clothing to children in need across Jamaica. Frater often speaks about the emotional impact of these efforts, stating that the items many people discard in the U.S. could make a world of difference to a child in his home country.
Another signature program, Hooping for Hope, provides free basketball camps and builds computer labs in underprivileged communities in Jamaica. Frater collaborates with local leaders, educators, and former professional athletes to ensure these initiatives foster long-term growth and development.
Frater’s camps, held annually in cities like Montego Bay and Ocho Rios, have reached thousands of young athletes, teaching them not only the fundamentals of sports but also life skills like teamwork, discipline, and leadership. “It’s not just about making better athletes,” Frater once said in an interview. “It’s about creating better individuals who can give back to their communities.”

Mentorship: A Lifelong Mission
Frater’s dedication to mentorship extends beyond sports. Through the Tournament of Champions, he emphasizes the importance of education and networking to young athletes, many of whom face significant challenges off the field. His programs include symposiums that teach student-athletes how to build valuable connections, handle finances, and prepare for life after sports.
“Many young athletes dream of professional sports careers, but not everyone will make it to the big leagues,” Frater explained. “That’s why education and preparation for life beyond the game are so important.”
In addition to his work in South Florida and Jamaica, Frater has supported countless athletes in achieving their academic and career goals. Notable participants in his programs include NBA stars like Keyon Dooling and Udonis Haslem, as well as numerous NFL players.

Continuing the Legacy
Frater’s work has left an indelible mark on both South Florida and Jamaica, and he shows no signs of slowing down. His commitment to creating opportunities for young people, especially those from underprivileged backgrounds, has earned him widespread respect and admiration.
As he reflected on receiving the Proclamation, Frater said, “This honor is not just for me; it’s for every young person who has been a part of our programs. It’s a reminder that we all have a role to play in shaping the future.”
With this recognition, Wesley Frater continues to inspire others to give back, proving that one person’s dedication can make a lasting impact across borders.
