Miramar, FL – December 13, 2024 – The inaugural in-person staging of the Best of Jamaica Awards dazzled the Jamaican diaspora with an evening of celebration, cultural pride, and recognition. Held on December 12, 2024, at the picturesque Miramar Cultural Center Gardens, the event marked a historic milestone for the celebrated awards platform, which has highlighted Jamaican excellence online for 25 years. This vibrant gathering also commemorated the 29th anniversary of Jamaicans.com, the influential hub for Jamaican culture worldwide.
Hosted by popular media personality Jody Ann Gray and Miramar Commissioner Yvette Colbourne, the evening was a testament to the strength and unity of the Jamaican diaspora. Commissioner Colbourne warmly welcomed attendees, expressing her pride in hosting an event that showcased the community’s incredible contributions. Fellow Commissioner Maxwell B. Chambers also reaffirmed Miramar’s commitment to uplifting the diaspora, setting the tone for a night filled with heartfelt speeches and joyous celebration.
Honouring the Best in Excellence
The awards spotlighted the best in Jamaican achievement through two key categories: People’s Choice and Impact Makers. The People’s Choice Awards, voted on by the public, celebrated beloved personalities and entities across culture, entertainment, and business. Highlights included Simone Clarke-Cooper, named Media Personality of the Year, who flew in from Kingston to accept her award. Moved by the recognition, Clarke-Cooper reflected, “This is not just an award for me—it’s a celebration of our culture and the stories we continue to share across the globe.”
The Impact Makers category celebrated individuals and organisations whose contributions have left an indelible mark on their communities and industries. Sheryl Lee Ralph was named Person of the Year and sent an inspiring video message, saying, “The Best of Jamaica Awards is not just a testament to any one individual but of the collective spirit of Jamaica.” Accepting on her behalf, Angella Donawa remarked, “Sheryl’s unwavering representation of Jamaican culture and pride is extraordinary.” Caribbean Sunshine Bakery was honoured as Business of the Year USA, while Judge Jewel Scott was recognised as Change Maker of the Year for her trailblazing work in law and advocacy.
New Award Categories
Two new categories was established this year, Judges’ Picks and Merit Awards adding an extra layer of distinction to the evening. Julie Mango and Basillia Barnaby-Cuff were recognised for their social media impact, while Rojé Stona and Kishane Thompson were honoured for their contributions to Jamaican sports. Mortimer, Gramps Morgan, and Masicka were celebrated for their musical achievements, and Hope Blake Wade and Joel Nomdarkham for their influence in fashion. These honourees exemplify the spirit of excellence and creativity that defines Jamaican talent.
A Night of Vibrancy and Unity
The event’s atmosphere was alive with the spirit of Jamaican culture. Entertainment included moving performances by Adrianna Clarke, the mesmerising sounds of Sons of Mystro, and an electrifying set by reggae artist Ed Robinson, who was joined on stage by Consul General Oliver Mair for a powerful rendition of Knocking on Heaven’s Door. Honourees travelled from across the globe to accept their awards, including Steven “Sir Rockwell” Warner, Sidonia and Howard “Namamous” Osbourne, and Allan Daisley of Kingston Creative.
