On This Day : Jamaican NFL Player Patrick Chung was Born in Kingston Jamaica

On August 19, 1987, Patrick Chung, the Jamaican-born American National Football League (NFL) football player, was born in Kingston, Jamaica. Chung, who has four brothers and three sisters, lived with his family in Jamaica prior to moving to California, where he attended Rancho Cucamonga High School.

Chung played college football at Oregon and professionally for the Philadelphia Eagles and was instrumental in elevating the Oregon Ducks team to the status of elite college teams. Patrick Chung has the distinction of having started more games for Oregon than any other player in the college’s history. While playing for Oregon, he started 51 consecutive games.

He decided not to take his final year of eligibility in 2008 in order to enter the NFL Draft that year. He would later reverse his decision and returned to Oregon to play in the 2009 Senior Bowl. He attended the NFL Scouting Combine, finishing most of the drills before experiencing an injury to his knee.

Chung attained enormous success during his professional career. After a stint with the Philadelphia Eagles, he returned to play for the Patriots and turned in exceptional performances throughout his time with the team. In March 2018, the Patriots recognised Chung’s contribution to the team by signing him to a two-year contract extension worth $7.80 million, with $5.12 million guaranteed, and a signing bonus of $3.60 million.

He was also named team captain for the first time in that year. In August of 2019, Chung signed a one-year contract extension with the team, which keeps him playing for the Patriots through the season of 2021.

In 2021 he would retire after 11 seasons and three Super Bowl rings.

Success runs in the family

Patrick Chung is not the only member of his family to achieve remarkable success. His parents had successful careers in the music industry before moving to the United States. His mother is Sophia George-Chung, a singer who was best known for her hit song “Girlie Girlie.” His father, Ronald Chung, discovered her talent when she came to audition for him on the advice of a friend.

In the end, the two got married, and he acted as her manager throughout her singing career. “Girlie Girlie” became the Number 1 song in Jamaica, and she went on to perform around the world as she gained recognition beginning in 1985. She enjoyed considerable fame, but she ultimately decided to leave the music business, and the family moved to the United States for the sake of the children in 1996.
