VP Records is making moves this April with a fresh batch of digital reissues. The standout for many will be Garnet Silk and his classic It’s Growing. This release gives us three different cuts to enjoy. You have the original 1991 vocal, a previously unreleased alternate take, and the riddim version. Every version has a different feel, and you should keep an ear out for the riddim track, as it features some vocal bits from Glen Ricks and his tune Sitting In The Back Seat.

Garnet was the man who really helped steer the music back toward its roots in the early 1990s. He changed the whole dancehall vibe by putting the focus back on consciousness. His voice had that gospel reach and a certain sob that made every word feel heavy with emotion. Garnet recorded many of his biggest hits for producer Bobby Digital at the Digital B studio. It’s a tragedy he passed away in that fire in December 1994 when he had so much more to give.

The song It’s Growing come across the Moving Away riddim, which is a classic Ken Boothe melody. Bobby Digital liked the vibe so much he put out a whole one-riddim LP called ‘Moving Away’. You might remember that Half Pint also had a giant hit on that same selection with I Am Not A Substitute Lover.

In the lyrics, Garnet talks about how love shines like a light and grows stronger every day. He really believed love was the cure for what ails the world. With backing vocals from Dean Frazer and Brian & Tony Gold, the sound is lush, and the Firehouse Crew keeps the foundation rock solid. It is good to see VP honoring the legacy like this. But let’s be honest, the massive would be even happier if they dropped this on a seven-inch vinyl.
