Cynthia Webber & Vin Morgan have passed away

Twice this week, we have received sad news. On Tuesday, June 4th, we learned that Cynthia ‘Joyce’ Webber, one half of Jamaican ska group The Tonettes, later evolving into The Summertairs, The Soul Sisters, and The Webber Sisters, had passed away. Just three days later, the news arrived that Vin Morgan had also left us at the age of 75.

Though Cynthia Webber contributed to what may have been Jamaica’s first girl group to record, her role in Jamaica’s musical legacy was more modest compared to that of musician and vocalist Vin Morgan.

Born in Linstead, St. Catherine, Morgan was a founding member of the Soul Defenders, a band established in 1968 that became a key force at Studio One under producer Coxsone Dodd. During their first recording session at 13 Brentford Road, Kingston, they recorded seven singles, four of which became instant hits, including Freddie McKay’s Picture On The Wall and Selective Few’s Selection Train. Morgan also recorded with legendary artists such as Culture, Dennis Brown, Horace Andy, Burning Spear, Wailing Souls, Alton Ellis, and The Heptones.

Renowned as the driving force behind the Soul Defenders, Morgan gained recognition for writing and performing his roots classic Jah Love. As musical director at Studio One in the 1970s, he expertly blended thoughtful lyrics with infectious melodies, shaping some of Jamaica’s greatest hits. Surprisingly, it wasn’t until 2017 that he released his first solo album, Give Thanks, through Iroko Records. (read review HERE)

His contributions to reggae and roots music will not be forgotten. Rest in power, Vin Morgan and Cynthia Webber.
