Few vocalists in Jamaican music history carry a falsetto as sweet and pure as Cornell Campbell. Back in the late fifties, he cut his first sides for Coxsone Dodd before making noise with groups like The Sensations and The Eternals. Often described as “feather-light but deeply emotive,” his signature voice gave him a rare dual appeal—revered on sound system dancefloors and prized by international collectors alike. Studio One anthems like Stars and Queen of the Minstrel established his name proper. By the early seventies, he linked up with Bunny “Striker” Lee during his iconic flying cymbal phase, dropping an endless run of heavy roots and lovers rock classics. He later recorded with heavyweights like Joe Gibbs and King Jammy, proving his voice never lost an ounce of charm over the years.

Linval Thompson

By the late seventies, Linval Thompson, born in 1954, was already making serious moves as both a singer and a producer. LPs like I Love Marijuana and Rocking Vibration showcased his warm, melodic roots style. At the same time, session work with players like The Revolutionaries and mixes at King Tubby’s gave his work a heavy, soulful punch. Thompson produced top talents like Barrington Levy, Trinity, and Freddie McGregor. Among his finest work behind the board sits Cornell Campbell’s 1978 LP, Sweet Baby.

Sweet Baby

Sweet Baby, hitting shelves in 1978 on the British Burning Sounds label, captures Cornell Campbell at a moment when his falsetto had evolved into one of the most refined voices in Jamaican music. The album features a stellar crew handling the backing. Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, Winston Wright, Ossie Hibbert, and Skully laid down the riddims at Channel One and Harry J, with Tubby managing the mix. The album was retitled Superstar for a 1979 Micron release, then landed on Vista Sounds in 1983. Burning Sounds put out the original 1978 pressing again on heavy red vinyl, complete with its original sleeve art and extensive sleeve notes.

Campbell always shines on songs about romance, and Sweet Baby plays right into that talent. It opens with Blinded By Love, a real catchy lovers track detailing a man getting tricked by someone he trusted. The title track Sweet Baby grabs you right away with creative horn lines, a touch that elevates other cuts like Can’t Hide My Love and I Didn’t Know.

Flipping them soul tunes into reggae hits is a long-standing yard tradition, and this record delivers three great covers. His take on Joe Simon’s minor hit Just Enough glides with pure confidence, matching the original without sweat. Sam Cooke’s Darling You Send Me transforms into a sweet reggae ballad tailor-made for that floating falsetto. And Gonna Take a Miracle, first done by The Royalettes, gets a warm, elegant treatment. Ken Boothe laid down the definitive yard version for Leslie Kong, but Campbell brings his own sweet flavor to the table. The LP closes out with The Judgement Come, the only roots track in the batch. Campbell switches straight into a conscious, urgent gear over an appealing riddim. It makes for a strong finish that adds real depth to the whole project.
