Julian Marley - Colors Of Royal

The nominations for the Best Reggae Album at the 66th Grammy awards were revealed in November 2023. The nominees included Burning Spear’s No Destroyer, Beenie Man’s Simma, Buju Banton’s Born For Greatness, Julian Marley & Antaeus’ Colors Of Royal and the riddim set Cali Roots Riddim Vol. 3. produced by Collie Buddz & J-Vibe. The winner of the 2024 and 66th Grammy award for Best Reggae Album would be announced on Sunday, February 4, 2024, at the glamorous annual Award ceremony held in the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

It was quite surprising (or wasn’t it really?!), that Julian Marley and Antaeus managed to win a Grammy award for their EP titled Colors Of Royal. However, since Julian Marley was busy performing at the Jammin Reggae Festival in Australia, the Grammy statuette was accepted by Alexx Antaeus.

Upon accepting the award, Antaeus said, “I dedicate this award to the people of Jamaica who have accepted me as their own, and have lived up to the island’s motto: OUT OF MANY ONE. Reggae and Dancehall have had a significant impact on Afrobeats, Reggaeton and Pop, and we will continue our efforts to bring Jamaican artists to the attention of the world.”

Colors Of Royal features production work from Alexx Antaeus (Earth, Wind & Fire, Rolling Stones,Yaksta), Notnice (Popcaan, Spice, Vybz Kartel), Mr. Sonic (Santana, Ricky Martin, Jon Secada), Sean Alaric (Teyana Taylor, Koffee, Protoje), and Prince Productions (Waka Flocka Flame, French Montana), while it was mastered by Grammy award-winning engineer Alex Psaroudakis. The 8-track EP is a departure from Julian Marley’s previous roots-reggae offerings as Marley and Antaeus have blended their styles and influences to create a kaleidoscope of sounds.

This is wat one of our contributors, Achis, had to say about Colors Of Royal when he expressed his thoughts about the five nominations.
“While I’ve never been the biggest fan of Juju Royal, Julian Marley…. well, he is a Marley, so he’s been nominated for one of these now for the third time (and not just because of THAT. Full credit to his talents, I’m just not super into it). Unsurprisngly, however, the project for which he was observed, “Colors Of Royal” alongside Antaeus, is… it’s tough. It’s an EP with eight tracks in full and two of those are remixes (and two of the originals are remakes) so I don’t know why, outside of the obvious, why this one was nominated but, of course, that means it will likely win.”
