Dancing Sensation Skitta Star
Some 30 years ago, or more, I had the pleasure of watching Bogle the dancer, referred to as, Mr. Wacky. I was at a big bad Stone Love session which seemed to start with a few fans. Then, at the wink of an eye – from nowhere – comes a multitude reminiscent of the incredible Biblical story with the five small loaves and two small fish.
Bogle’s framed structure could move in any angle due to his elasticity, and he did all this seemingly effortlessly.
During that same era, I met another dancer Bruk-Up, a name which speaks for itself. He could outstretch your imagination, like a magician at a circus.
Now, what can I tell you, is that this fascinating story continues with Skitta Star, a name which has much to do with stardom, and one you will remember for a very long time.
Skitta Star, given name Shakeel Thomas, is from Tavares Gardens, a community that rests between Downtown Kingston and Three Miles. He spends some of his time in the Sunshine City of Portmore.
“That’s where my mom and dad live, where that energy for dancing seems to rise like the sun.”
“I started to dance at about age six, listening to R&B music by such artiste as Usher. The beats have a different twist from dancehall, one with a harmonic sound.”
“My breakthrough in dancing came when I began working at hotels. These included Riu, Ochi Rios, and Sandals Royal Plantation.”
Skitta Don has learnt many of his dance moves from French twin dancers Les Twins.
“I keep saying they are the don because of their versatility to approach and conquer every genre of music. They also keep turning out fresh dance moves,” he adds.
In terms of clients, he recognizes the importance of social media. “That’s where I post my product (dance moves). People reach out to me, send me a song, and I create the moves.”
One such client is fashionista and record producer A’Legends. “There are so many ways one can put their product on the market and Skitta Star can surely make it happen,” she boasts.
As for the profession of dancing, he feels wherever opportunity knocks he is ready to ride. “I need to explore the world. This is one door for many, many avenues for stardom. Just the thought of meeting people from different countries and cultures is an adventure by itself.”
