Hard work is something members of Suns Of Dub have thrived on since forming in 2010. Based on their plans, the Trinidadian DJ trio have a busy 2024 in store.

Ras Jammy, Jah Bami and CP.U returned to the road in early 2022 after almost two years on the sidelines due to Covid-19. They toured Europe for most of last year, as well as Israel, but come next year, fans can expect a lot of new material.

“The first quarter of 2024 will see Suns Of Dub tours in the Swiss Alps as well as some time in Spain in March for Spannabis. Music will flow non-stop as we anticipate the long overdue release of our studio compilation album ‘Evolution of Dub’. A new Amapiano and AfroBeat EP from CP.U, and ‘Suns of Dub Meets Sleepy Time Ghost’, a serious exploration into our musical influences featuring various genres produced by Suns Of Dub and our UK partners,” Ras Jammy explained.

He added that collaborations are also on the drawing board with artistes such as IYAMAH, Daniella Dee, Macka B and Micah Shemaiah.

Ras Jammy and Addis Pablo, son of dub visionary Augustus Pablo, started Suns Of Dub 13 years ago in Jamaica. While sharing an appreciation for dub music in its traditional form, they wanted to expand its base by blending contemporary sounds by working with new-wave roots artistes.

Their first major project was the 2013 album, ‘Selassie Soulahz in Dub’, which was critically-acclaimed in Europe. It caught the attention of hot EDM producers, Major Lazer, with whom they collaborated.

Addis Pablo left in 2016 and was eventually replaced by CP.U. Ras Jammy, who hails from Arima in northern Trinidad, said that has not stopped the group’s growth.

“Since inception, Suns Of Dub have gone through continuous evolution, we have drastically expanded our sound, exploring many more genres and incorporating more dancehall, Afro, soca and house in the mix. Our appearance has taken on a new look and performances have also seen a big lift, with the core collective being myself, Jah Bami and CP.U, being driven by a whole heap our new composers and contributors from around the globe,” he explained. “The growth has also allowed us to expand our label, and services as a label, offering publishing and rights management services for artiste development.”

Recent Suns Of Dub productions include ‘Holy Mount Zion’, a roots single by Norris Man; and ‘Hold Your Heads Up’ by Jah Bami, which celebrates the 93rd anniversary of the Coronation of Haile Selassie I as Ethiopian emperor in November.

Ras Jammy stressed that even after 10 years, Suns Of Dub remains a work in progress. Further expansion, he promised, is on the cards.

“Doing a Suns Of Dub live dub performance with a band is indeed something we have spoken about for years, and do look forward to producing with the right band and musical director,” he said.
