Horace Andy, Ranking Buckers – Them Never Tell I / Lie Teacher Gal 12″ single

The seventh 12-inch in Deeper Roots’ ongoing reissue series shines a spotlight on Horace Andy, and few artists are more deserving. Emerging from the Studio One era, Andy built a career on one of reggae’s most unmistakable voices, a haunting falsetto that has remained instantly recognisable across more than five decades of recordings. During the 1970s he enjoyed a particularly fruitful run with producer Bunny ‘Striker’ Lee, yielding many of the recordings that helped cement his reputation. Interest in that period remains strong, reflected by the recent release of a double LP compiling some of his finest Bunny Lee productions. Horace remains an active recording and performing artist to this day.

Both cuts featured here originate from 1977 sessions produced by Niney The Observer. One of Jamaica’s most influential producers, Niney helped shape classic recordings by artists including Dennis Brown, Max Romeo and Gregory Isaacs. His trademark economy is evident throughout these sides: focused arrangements, strong musicianship and a deep understanding of timing, balance and atmosphere.

The A-side pairs Horace Andy’s Them Never Tell I with the deejay companion piece Lie Teacher Gal by Ranking Buckers. Over a sturdy Soul Syndicate backing, Andy reflects on deception and misinformation imposed upon ordinary sufferers. The bassline remains firmly at the forefront while cavernous drum effects give the riddim extra power and character. Andy’s vocal glides effortlessly above the track, and though little is known about Ranking Buckers, his confident toast complements the tune remarkably well.

On the flip, Materialist finds Andy delivering a stern warning against misplaced values and worldly obsession. The message is clear, yet never heavy-handed, carried by the singer’s characteristic blend of conviction and restraint. Soul Syndicate provide a rolling, uncluttered backdrop that keeps the focus exactly where it belongs. The accompanying dub cut, Poor Man Style, allows King Tubby to work the controls with typical finesse, subtly reshaping the rhythm through echo, dropouts and spatial effects.

Nearly fifty years on, these Observer recordings have lost none of their appeal. Deeper Roots once again demonstrates a keen ear for timeless Jamaican music, bringing two more worthy sides back into circulation.
