A young Jamaican has earned international recognition after graduating at the top of his medical class at Jinzhou Medical University in China.
24 year old Dr. Orbin O’Bryan Barnes, who hails from Negril in Westmoreland, was named valedictorian of the university’s Class of 2026 after finishing with the highest academic standing among his graduating class. His achievement has drawn praise from Jamaicans at home and across the diaspora, with many celebrating his success on social media.
Barnes’ accomplishment also adds to Jamaica’s growing academic footprint in China. In recent years, Jamaicans have distinguished themselves at Chinese universities, including fellow Westmoreland native Dr. Nicoleen Johnson, who made history as the first Jamaican to earn a PhD in China. Barnes now joins a growing number of Jamaicans gaining international recognition through academic excellence.

From Negril to Medical School in China
Dr. Barnes chose to study medicine in China after exploring several options for higher education during the COVID-19 pandemic. While he received an offer to study medicine in Jamaica, attending university overseas was the more affordable choice for his family.
His medical programme lasted six years, including five years of classroom study followed by a one-year internship. Because of pandemic travel restrictions, he spent nearly two years studying online from Jamaica before he was finally able to travel to China and begin in-person classes.
The transition demanded more than academic discipline. Like many international students, Barnes had to adjust to a new culture, language, teaching style and healthcare system while pursuing one of the world’s most rigorous degrees.
Learning Mandarin quickly became an important part of daily life. Although he had begun studying the language during his online classes, living in China allowed him to develop fluency through regular conversations with classmates and guidance from university staff.
Despite the unusual start to his university journey and the challenges of adapting to life in a new country, Barnes remained focused on his studies. By graduation, he had become proficient enough to deliver his valedictory address in Mandarin—a testament to the years of dedication and perseverance that defined his medical education.
Graduating First in His Class
Being named valedictorian is one of the highest academic honours a university can give a graduating student. It is awarded to the student who achieves the strongest academic performance in the graduating class.
Barnes earned that distinction after consistently performing at a high level throughout medical school. During his six-year programme, he received five First-Class Scholarship Awards and one Second-Class Scholarship Award, earned two honorary academic credentials, published two medical research articles and was recognised as the Most Outstanding Performer in the Clinical Exit Examinations.
As valedictorian, he also delivered the graduation address in Mandarin during the university’s commencement ceremony in China.
Speaking with the Jamaicans.com team, Dr. Barnes said:
“Standing at the top of my graduating class wasn’t just about academic success. It was the result of countless sacrifices, resilience through difficult moments and an unwavering belief in my purpose.”
He added that leaving Jamaica to study medicine in China was one of the biggest decisions he has ever made.
“I am grateful that every challenge became an opportunity to grow.”

A Reflection of Jamaica’s Education System
Barnes completed seven years at Munro College, where he served as Deputy Head Boy, before pursuing medicine overseas. His academic foundation in Jamaica prepared him for the demands of medical school and helped him adapt to university-level studies in China.
That commitment to excellence continued throughout his time abroad. In 2024, Barnes became a published medical author and received the National Research & Design Gold Award, further strengthening an already impressive academic record. He credits much of his success to maintaining an unwavering routine and disciplined work ethic throughout his studies.
Barnes is among a growing number of Jamaican students looking to Asia for higher education opportunities. Some rely on public fundraising to finance their studies, while others earn scholarships through academic excellence. Many go on to distinguish themselves at overseas institutions before returning home with the knowledge and skills to strengthen their professions and communities.
China has become an increasingly popular destination, particularly for those pursuing medicine. Many of its universities offer internationally recognised medical programmes at a cost that is often more affordable than comparable programmes in several Western countries.

Social Media Celebrates His Success
News of Barnes’ achievement quickly spread across social media, where Jamaicans from around the world congratulated him on reaching the top of his graduating class.
Shortly after graduation, Barnes reflected on the journey in an Instagram post, writing: “Not luck, just years of sacrifice, pressure and execution.”
Many users described his accomplishment as a proud moment for Jamaica and welcomed another example of a Jamaican earning recognition on the international stage. The positive response reflected the pride many people feel when Jamaicans excel in education, science, business and other professional fields.

An Achievement That Inspires Future Students
Dr. Orbin O’Bryan Barnes has now joined the ranks of Jamaican professionals who have earned international academic recognition. His journey from Negril to becoming valedictorian at a medical university in China shows what steady commitment and hard work can achieve.
Barnes hopes his experience will encourage other young Jamaicans who are considering studying overseas or pursuing careers in medicine.
“I hope my journey encourages others to dream boldly, work relentlessly and remember that where you come from should never limit where you can go.”
Barnes also reflected on what the honour means to him and to his home country.
“It is a privilege to bring this achievement home to Jamaica.”
