WEEKLY DEVOTIONAL: “Speak the Word Only”

The centurion’s request in Matthew 8:8 stands as one of the most remarkable expressions of faith in the Gospels. As a Roman military officer, he was both a Gentile and a representative of the occupying power in Israel. Yet unlike many who sought signs or demanded proof, this man recognized something extraordinary about Jesus. Understanding authority from his military experience, he knew that commands did not require physical presence to be effective. Just as soldiers obeyed his orders, he believed sickness would obey Christ’s command. His confidence was not in a ritual, a touch, or a visible demonstration of power. His confidence rested entirely in the authority of Jesus’ word.

Theologically, this passage reveals the absolute authority of Christ. The centurion understood what many others missed: Jesus was not merely a teacher or healer; His word carried divine power. Throughout Scripture, God accomplishes His purposes through His word. At creation, God spoke, and the universe came into existence (Genesis 1:3). The psalmist declares, “He sent His word, and healed them” (Psalm 107:20). Later, Isaiah would affirm that God’s word never returns void but accomplishes what He intends (Isaiah 55:11). The centurion believed that the same authority resided in Christ. Jesus commended this faith, declaring that He had not found such great faith even in Israel (Matthew 8:10).

For believers today, the centurion’s example challenges us to examine where our confidence truly rests. We often trust God when we can see evidence, feel progress, or understand His methods. Yet faith is most clearly demonstrated when we trust His word before we see the outcome. Romans 10:17 reminds us that “faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Genuine faith takes God at His word, believing His promises even when circumstances appear unchanged.

The centurion teaches us that faith is not measured by proximity to a miracle but by confidence in the One who speaks. The same Christ who spoke healing over a distance still speaks through His Word today. When fear rises, when answers seem delayed, and when circumstances appear impossible, believers can stand on God’s promises. His Word remains powerful, trustworthy, and effective. Sometimes the greatest act of faith is to say, “Lord, speak the word only,” and trust Him to do what only He can do.
