Jamaican-Born Gavin Beckford to Be Honored as Michigan Chronicle Men of Excellence

Jamaican born Dr. Gavin Beckford is set to be honored as part of the 2026 Michigan Chronicle Men of Excellence class, a recognition that celebrates African American men making an impact in their communities through leadership and service.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Beckford attended Campion College before continuing his studies overseas. His career has since grown across business, economic development, and civic leadership in the United States. The recognition places him among a group of men from different sectors across Michigan who are being acknowledged for their work in community growth and public service.

The Michigan Chronicle announced that the honorees will be recognized during the Men of Excellence Awards and Induction Celebration on June 18, 2026, in downtown Detroit.

From Kingston to Community Leadership

Beckford’s journey began in Kingston, Jamaica, where he spent his early years and attended Campion College. His educational path later took him to the United States and Europe.

He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing from Howard University. He later completed a Master of Business Administration at Babson College and earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Management and Entrepreneurship from IE Business School.

Throughout his career, Beckford has focused on economic development, mentorship, and community growth. His work in Canton Township centers on building partnerships and creating opportunities for businesses and residents.

Today, he serves as the Economic Development and Downtown Development Authority Manager for the Charter Township of Canton, Michigan. Beyond his main role, he also serves across regional and state organizations and participates in efforts that support families in need.

His experiences living and studying in Jamaica, the United States, and Spain have helped shape his approach to leadership and community development.

Recognition from the Michigan Chronicle

The Michigan Chronicle Men of Excellence program recognizes men across Michigan who have shown leadership in business, education, healthcare, government, faith based work, and community development.

According to the Michigan Chronicle, the recognition highlights men who continue to shape their communities through service, mentorship, and leadership.

Beckford’s inclusion in the 2026 class reflects his role in economic development and civic leadership in Michigan. The group of honorees includes leaders from education, healthcare, public service, labor, business, and nonprofit organizations across the state.

Life in Detroit as a Jamaican

Beckford has also shared parts of his personal journey while discussing life as a Jamaican living in Detroit, Michigan.

In a 2025 interview, he reflected on moving from Jamaica to Michigan and adjusting to life in the United States. He discussed cultural differences, community life, and the importance of keeping Jamaican traditions alive while living abroad.

During the interview, he also spoke about growing up in Stony Hill, St. Andrew, and the lasting influence of teachers at Campion College.

Outside of work, Beckford enjoys photography, travel, cooking, and spending time with his wife and two children.
