You know that feeling when you drop the needle and it instantly takes you somewhere else? That’s exactly what you get with the 2026 reissue of The New Heavyweight Champion by The Upsessions. This one sits in a sweet spot. It’s got that throwback charm, but it still feels alive and kicking. And, it also reminds you why people paid attention to this band in the first place.
Back in 2006, this was the band’s debut. And from the jump, they locked into a deep, vintage groove. You can hear the influence of late-’60s/early-’70s Jamaica sounds all over it. But it never feels forced or overly serious. There’s a playful edge running through it.
Drop the needle on Why You Done Me Wrong, and you’ll hear it straight away. When you close your eyes while listening, you could swear it’s an old studio session from Kingston that somehow slipped through the cracks. That’s how close they get to the feel of that period in Jamaica’s music history. And it’s not just a one-off. Most of the album carries that same spirit.
Then we roll into Rudie Cool It Down, followed by the sterling rocksteady piece Early Getoff, easily one of the standouts here. The delightful Baby BaBy Baby is another one that fans of classic rocksteady will hold onto.
What really makes everything work is the detail. The organ has that warm, slightly gritty edge, the bass and drums are tight and steady, no need to show off. And the whole thing has that dusty, lo-fi touch that gives it character. It’s raw in the best way. You can feel the dedication of the people behind it.
But this isn’t just imitation. It are tracks like Hooligan ’69 and Cool Ska Time that bring a bit of cheek and attitude. You hear the nod to skinhead reggae, but it’s done with a wink, not a lecture. That’s what makes The Upsessions stand out. They keep it fun.
This pink vinyl pressing marks the 20th anniversary of this classic debut album, but more importantly, it’s more than just a collector’s piece. The music still hits. It still moves.
Whether you’ve been following The Upsessions for years or you’re just stepping into this lane, this album’s an easy recommendation. Just let it spin from start to finish. That’s how it’s meant to be heard.
