Jah Will Explain
Dolphin “Naggo” Morris was already building a name before his time with The Heptones. He’d recorded Su Su Pon Rasta for Joe Gibbs and You Should Love Your Brother for Prince Jammy. Then in 1978 he got the call to replace Leroy Sibbles in The Heptones.
It sounded like a big opportunity. But the group was going through a rough patch. Their polished stage image and pop cover songs didn’t really sit well with reggae crowds anymore. So while performing with the group, Naggo also started thinking about carving out his own solo path.
That road led him to Prince Far I in 1979. Far I produced Morris’ Jah Will Explain for his Cry Tuff label, and the result is classic late-’70s roots reggae. Deep bass, a solid riddim, and lyrics that lean on Rastafarian themes such as patience, faith, and trusting Jah’s plan.
Over the years the track has become something of a cult favourite among collectors. Original Jamaican pressings are hard to find, and the song carries that Cry Tuff sound Prince Far I was known for.
The track even made its way to Europe on a 12″ release through Hitrun, Adrian Sherwood’s label before the On-U Sound days. And if you’ve heard both versions, you’ll notice something special: the Hitrun release features a completely different dub mix than the Jamaican pressing.
All these years later, Jah Will Explain still stands as one of Naggo Morris’ most memorable solo recordings. A roots gem that reggae lovers keep rediscovering.
