Deeper Roots just dropped a 12″ that shows exactly why his reputation remains untouchable. On this release, Niney handles both sides of the glass as artist and producer. It’s that militant roots sound he’s famous for—raw, heavy, and strictly 1970s. You can even hear a bit of that Black Ark atmosphere floating in the mix.
The record gives you two extended vocal cuts along with their dub counterparts. Mutiny (Confusion In A Babylon) takes over side one. It’s a fierce, stripped-back track with aggressive drumming and a massive horn section that really hammers home the message.
The backing comes from the legendary Soul Syndicate, performing here under their Black Stallion alias. Led by the rock-solid bass of George “Fully” Fullwood and the intricate guitar work of Earl “Chinna” Smith, this band defined the “Flying Cymbals” sound of the mid-70s. For the dub version, they let the horns float out in the echo while the drums crash and the bassline just keeps pumping.
Side two features Jah Fire, where Niney drops heavy warnings about a fire no one can run from. Soul Syndicate provides a backing track that’s steady as a rock, and the harmonies—which sound like they could be The Heptones—add a serious layer of atmosphere. The dub, titled Hotter Fire, is a total standout. Niney isn’t shy with the dropouts, especially on the vocals, and he pushes the rhythm guitar right to the front of the speakers. Truly wicked stuff for the collection.
