Scientist to Live-Dub Blanc du Blanc on April 26
If you love dub music and you live in—or anywhere near—New Jersey, you need to immediately buy tickets (see link at the bottom of this article) for what promises to be one of the most far-out, fun, and sonically pleasing dub extravaganzas of 2025.
On April 26, legendary studio engineer and dub pioneer, Hopeton Brown—known worldwide by his stage name, “Scientist”—will be live-dubbing upstart—and up-and-coming—New Jersey-based reggae-punk band, “Blanc du Blanc.”
Despite releasing, in the last few years, two experimental, extremely irie and highly recommended full-length LPs (“The Blanc Album,” 2020; “Regatta du Blanc du Blanc,” 2022)—and an EP (“Wind of Change,” 2021) in which they collaborated on a mix with the legendary Lee “Scratch” Perry—Blanc du Blanc has, so far, flown somewhat under the radar in the reggae world.
This is strange given the quality of their output, but explainable, in part, due to the pandemic and other circumstances which have, until now, prevented the band from playing together in a live performance. This will change big-time April 26! But this will not only be Blanc du Blanc’s debut show. This historic happening will double as a record-release party celebrating the release, April 18, of Blanc du Blanc’s third LP: “Scientist Meets Blanc Du Blanc: Before the Beginning.”
On March 28, the band released a single from off the album called “The Receptive: Harmony of Stars.” They also released an extremely unique and creative animated video for the tune in which a superhero-clad Scientist meets the dark, otherworldly, shaman-like character “Blanc du Blanc.” Watch the video and listen to the single below.
Resistant to easy characterization, Blanc du Blanc has described itself as having been “Created by an undercover artist working as an agent for Monrovia. Blanc du Blanc is a heteronym—an imagined character at present caped and masked. It is the face of a klatch of musicians who’ll be releasing…mostly instrumental dub records on vinyl.”
Determined to learn more about Blanc du Blanc—and their new album with Scientist—I’ll be headed to this show later this month. I hope to see you there! If you miss the show, however, check back here—at Reggae-Vibes—a few weeks after the show, as I’ll post my review with plenty of photos and exclusive video footage. And, before any masks and costumes are donned, I’ll interview Blanc du Blanc’s band-leader, Chris Harford, so look out for that, too, as this is a band everyone should know—and listen to!
For your information, this will be an intimate, one-of-a-kind family-friendly show—where everyone is welcome—and lucky attendees will be treated to an opening DJ set by Selecta Jerry, host of the highly respected and extremely popular “Sounds of the Caribbean” reggae radio podcast; Selecta Jerry will be spinning all his favorite new and classic records.
The show will take place rain or shine at the “Antique Barn” in Hillsborough, NJ, and will run from 4 pm to 10 pm. Kids are welcome free with a parent or guardian. The event will be privately catered with Jamaican-themed food and a full bar (included in the ticket price). Smoking is allowed outside near the fire pit—just not inside the barn.
Follow this link to buy tickets, but don’t wait long, because capacity is limited and this extremely cool, must-attend show is expected to sell out.
