Gratitude is a powerful act of faith. Psalm 118:1 reminds us to give thanks to the Lord because of His goodness and everlasting love. This verse is not just a call to thanksgiving when life is going well but a reminder that God’s love and faithfulness remain constant, regardless of our circumstances.
The psalmist declares that God’s love endures forever. This means that His love is not temporary or conditional—it is eternal. In a world where love often fades and relationships change, God’s love remains steadfast. Lamentations 3:22-23 echoes this truth: “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.” Each day, God renews His mercy toward us, providing fresh reasons to give thanks.
Throughout Scripture, we see examples of people who chose gratitude even in difficult situations. David, the author of many Psalms, praised God despite facing hardships. In Psalm 34:1, he declares, “I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise will always be on my lips.” The Apostle Paul also exemplified this attitude. Writing from prison, he encouraged believers in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Gratitude is not dependent on our circumstances but on God’s unchanging character.
Psalm 118 is a song of victory and thanksgiving, often associated with the celebration of God’s deliverance. In Psalm 118:6, the psalmist declares, “The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” This confidence comes from knowing that God is sovereign and faithful. Even in trials, we can trust that He is working for our good (Romans 8:28). Let us take some time to reflect on God’s goodness. What has He done in your life that you can give thanks for? Even in challenges, look for His hand at work. Chinese philosopher Confucius puts it this way, “I was complaining that I had no shoes till I met a man who had no feet.” Keeping a gratitude journal or intentionally thanking God in prayer can transform our perspectives. Instead of focusing on what is lacking, let us shift our hearts toward His endless blessings. “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.”
