The star studded event marked Rory Stonelove’s 40th anniversary in music, drawing a crowd of admirers to revel in his monumental career. With its chic ambience and vibrant atmosphere, the venue provided the perfect backdrop for an evening of non-stop entertainment that stretched into the early hours.
Among the many notable attendees were Ky-Mani and Rohan Marley, DJ Delano of Renaissance Disco, dancehall artist Popeye Caution, Andrew Minott—author and CEO of both AnchorMinott Foundation and Global Vybz Entertainment—and Marlon Farquharson of South Florida’s Visions Band.
The evening’s musical offerings were a testament to the enduring legacy of Jamaican sound system culture. Rory, alongside fellow powerhouse selectors such as King Waggy Tee, Silent Addy, Lank from Code Red, and Willy Chin of Black Chiney, kept the crowd energised with flawless juggling that had the poolside audience skanking the night away.
The Immortal Stone Love Sound System
Established in 1972 in Kingston, Jamaica, by Winston “Wee Pow” Powell, Stone Love Sound System is a cornerstone of Jamaican music. Known affectionately as ‘Fada Pow’, Powell built the sound system from humble beginnings into an internationally revered name synonymous with excellence. Over the decades, Stone Love—often called ‘Stone Love Immortal’—has become legendary for its superior sound quality and exclusive dubplates, which have nurtured the careers of icons such as Shabba Ranks, Buju Banton, Wayne Wonder, Tanya Stephens, and Beenie Man, among others.
Throughout the 1980s, Stone Love was a dominant force at iconic venues like the ‘House of Leo’, where it attracted packed houses. Renowned for its versatility, the sound system delivers an eclectic mix of genres, ensuring a unique experience at every session. Over the years, its roster of selectors has included celebrated names like Billy Slaughter, Ice Burg, Diamond, and Gugumental, alongside its legendary founder, Wee Pow.
Rory Stonelove: A Sound System Icon
Born Rory Gilligan in South London to Jamaican parents, Rory relocated to Jamaica in the early 1980s and quickly made his mark as a sound system selector. His innovative style and dynamic approach earned him recognition as one of Jamaica’s finest selectors. Joining the Stone Love Sound System, he became a cornerstone of its success and was fittingly dubbed Rory ‘Stonelove’. His influence has cemented Stone Love’s status as one of the most iconic sound systems in Jamaican culture.
Beyond his role as a selector, Rory has excelled as a music producer. He founded the Black Dub Music label, which has delivered some of the most critically acclaimed reggae albums in recent years. From creating timeless hits to fostering the careers of emerging talents, Rory Stonelove’s contributions have left an indelible mark on reggae and dancehall, ensuring his legacy as a true legend in Jamaican music.
