Upcoming: Dub Syndicate – Out Here On The Perimeter 1989-1996
The UK’s On-U Sound label is set to reissue four classic dub albums from Dub Syndicate plus a new set, under the title Out Here On The Perimeter 1989-1996. This release serves as a sequel to the Ambience In Dub boxset, which celebrated the early works of Dub Syndicate. Out Here On The Perimeter 1989-1996 continues the story from the late 1980s, when Lincoln Valentine Scott aka Style Scott, notable for his work with the Roots Radics and Creation Rebel, came to the forefront of the Dub Syndicate project as bandleader and co-producer.
The albums included in the reissue project are:
Strike The Balance, first released in 1989, includes vocal performances from Bim Sherman on a rendition of Lloyd & Devon’s Cuss Cuss, and Shara Nelson, noted for her work with Massive Attack on Blue Lines, who lends her voice to a cover of Serge Gainsbourg & Jane Birkin’s Je T’aime. The release of this album marked the beginnings of Dub Syndicate as a touring act.
Stoned Immaculate is arguably the most recognized album by Dub Syndicate. This 1991 release was crafted between Jamaica and London, featuring the riddims of Style Scott enhanced by various artists, including guitar from Skip McDonald, vocals by Lee “Scratch” Perry and Akabu, samples featuring the legendary Prince Far I, and keyboards played by Keith Levene.
The 1993 album Echomania showcases drummer Style Scott and bassist Flabba Holt, both from the renowned Roots Radics, laying down heavy riddims while Adrian Sherwood handles the production. Guest artists include Lee “Scratch” Perry on Dubbing Psycho Thriller and Dubaddisababa, Michael Franti on No No, and tabla player Talvin Singh featured on multiple tracks.
Ital Breakfast from 1996 sees Style Scott bringing together an array of Jamaican musicians to build the riddims. This group musicians includes players of instruments from Roots Radics, Soul Syndicate, Joe Gibbs’ Professionals, and Bunny Lee’s Aggrovators. Sherwood did the mixing in London, enhancing the recordings with overdubs from Skip McDonald and Akabu. Featured guests include the legendary deejay I Roy on the title track and Lee “Scratch” Perry on The Captain’s Trance Mission.
Furthermore, this project introduces a fresh collection titled Obscured By Version. It showcases Dub Syndicate ‘versions’ that are drawn from their iconic 1989 – 1996 era. For this new set, Adrian Sherwood revisited the original recordings, seeking innovative perspectives on the enduring riddims of Style Scott, alongside new overdubs from Cyrus Richard (Dub Asante Band). This bonus album presents newly crafted dubs of tracks initially featured on albums like Time Boom X De Devi Dead and Stoned Immaculate.
The release is scheduled for February 28, 2025, in various formats including separate 12″ LP vinyl, CD box, digital download and streaming platforms.
